Understanding Labor Contractions
What is Duration? Duration measures how long an individual contraction lasts, from the moment it begins to tighten until it fully relaxes.
What is Frequency? Frequency is the time elapsed between the start of one contraction and the start of the next contraction. It includes both the contraction itself and the rest period in between.
The 5-1-1 Rule of Labor
OB-GYNs and midwives recommend heading to the hospital or birth location when:
- 5: Contractions occur every 5 minutes or less (from start to start).
- 1: Each contraction lasts for at least 1 minute.
- 1: This pattern continues consistently for 1 hour.
Medical Disclaimer: Every pregnancy and labor is unique. If your water breaks, if you experience significant bleeding, or if you feel severe pain in between contractions, contact your doctor immediately, regardless of what the timer displays.
