- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Method: A natural process that uses pressurized liquid carbon dioxide to dissolve and extract caffeine from wet coffee beans, leaving no chemical solvents behind.
To avoid chemical solvents, look for coffee labels that specify βSwiss Water Process,β βWater Decaffeinated,β or are certified organic, as organic standards prohibit the use of chemical solvents like methylene chloride.

- Iron Absorption Inhibition: Coffee, including decaf, contains compounds called polyphenols and chlorogenic acid. These compounds can bind to non-heme iron (the iron found in plant foods and prenatal vitamins) in the digestive tract, reducing its absorption by up to 50β90%. To avoid gestational anemia, drink decaf coffee at least one hour before or after eating meals or taking your prenatal vitamins.
- Digestive Sensitivity: Decaf coffee is acidic and can trigger heartburn, acid reflux, or stimulate bowel movements, which may already be sensitive during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
- Watch the Additives: Limit high-sugar syrups, heavy creams, or artificial flavorings added to your decaf coffee, as these add empty calories and can impact gestational blood sugar control.
