First Trimester Guide

Welcome to the beginning of your pregnancy journey. The first trimester is a phase of rapid development where a single fertilized cell evolves into a fully structured fetus.

Biological Timeline

Baby's Rapid Growth

During these first 13 weeks, your baby transitions from a microscopic blastocyst to an embryo, and finally to a fetus.

The baby's neural tube closes (forming the brain and spinal cord), limbs begin bud formation, fingerprints develop, reflexes form, and by Week 5, the tiny heart starts beating and pumping blood.

Milestone Highlights

  • Week 3-4: Implantation into the uterine lining. Embryo forms.
  • Week 5: Heart begins beating, neural tube starts closing.
  • Week 8: Embryonic tail disappears; fingers and toes form.
  • Week 12: Kidneys produce urine; baby begins swallowing amniotic fluid.

Common Symptoms & Changes

Surging hormone levels (hCG, progesterone, and estrogen) are peaking, preparing your uterus to nourish the embryo. These biological changes can trigger typical early symptoms:

🤢 Nausea / Morning Sickness 😴 Extreme Fatigue 🍼 Tender, Sore Breasts 🚽 Frequent Urination

Clinical Guidance & Screenings

  • First Doctor Visit: Scheduled between Week 8 and 12 to verify fetal heartbeat and estimate gestation dates.
  • NIPT Screening: Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing can be conducted from Week 10 onwards to check chromosomal counts.
  • Folic Acid Intake: Essential to take 400 mcg daily to prevent neural tube defects.
  • Avoid Food Hazards: Abstain from unpasteurized dairy, raw fish (sushi), deli meat, alcohol, and tobacco.
