Weeks 14 - 27
Second Trimester Guide
Often referred to as the "honeymoon phase," the second trimester is characterized by stabilized hormones, returning energy, and the exciting first movements of your baby.
Growth & Senses
Fetal Maturity & Movement
This phase is all about refinement. The baby's hearing is fully online by Week 18, and they can hear your voice and heartbeat.
Eye blinking begins in Week 26, taste buds form, the baby practice-breathes amniotic fluid, and a protective cheese-like layer called vernix caseosa forms over their transparent skin.
Milestone Highlights
- Week 16: Quickening: you may feel the baby move for the first time.
- Week 20: Halfway point. Measurements shift to head-to-heel.
- Week 24: The baby reaches clinical viability outside the womb.
- Week 27: Lungs, liver, and immune system prep ready for Trimester 3.
Your Changing Body
Your uterus rises out of the pelvic cavity, relieving bladder pressure but causing muscle stretching. As your belly expands, you might feel new physiological changes:

Clinical Recommendations
- Anatomy Scan: Conducted between Week 18 and 22 to check the structural health of baby's organs.
- Glucose Screening: Done between Week 24 and 28 to test for gestational diabetes.
- Increase Iron: Crucial to eat spinach, beef, and legumes to prevent pregnancy anemia.
- Sleeping Position: Transition to sleeping on your side (left side preferred) to keep blood flow optimal.
